What is Title IX
Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972 [20 U.S.C. § 1681] is a federal civil rights law that states:
No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.
As a recipient of federal financial assistance, Orange Coast College is subject to the requirements of Title IX. This means Orange Coast College must provide a prompt and equitable response to any report made to the Title IX Coordinator or District employee with authority to institute corrective measures.
Federal and state legislation, Supreme Court decisions, and guidance from the U.S. Department of Education have broadened the scope of Title IX to include:
- Discrimination and harassment based on sex, gender, gender identity or gender expression, and sexual orientation
- Sexual harassment
- Sexual assault
- Dating and domestic violence
