Filipino American History Month

Filipino American History Month flyer

The celebration of Filipino American History Month in October honors the first recorded Filipino presence in the U.S. on October 18, 1587, when "Luzones Indios" landed at Morro Bay, California. According to Filipino American National Historical Society, this year’s theme, "Struggle, Resistance, Solidarity, and Resilience," highlights key anniversaries: 100 years since the Hawai'i Sugar Strikes and Hanapepe Massacre, 75 years since the arrests of Chris Mensalves and Ernesto Mangaoang, 50 years since Agbayani Village and Thelma Buchholdt's election, and 25 years since Joseph Ileto’s murder.

To recognize Filipino American History Month, here are some events in the nearby communities that you can attend to learn and reflect more on the culture:

You are invited to attend the virtual webinars hosted by the Asian Pacific Americans in Higher Education Association (APAHE) —“AANAPISIs: Empowering Generations of AANHPI Students,” on September 24, and “Supporting the Next Generation of AANHPI Leaders” on September 27.
