• Employment Skills Workshop - 3-part series (all parts are REQUIRED to be attended):
  • Employment Skills - Part 1 & 2:  Our foundational workshop covers the skills needed to search for and secure employment. During this interactive, two-part class, students learn how to make themselves stand out by learning tips on the application process, identifying their skills/strengths, developing their elevator pitch, and gaining confidence in answering/asking interview questions. Students leave feeling empowered and more confident in their interviewing process.
  • Mock Interview - Part 3:  One-on-one interviews with local business professionals will allow students to hone their presentation skills, calm their nerves, and grow from immediate professional feedback. Opportunity for a professional headshot to be taken prior to or after completion of your mock interview. Dress professionally!

• First-Generation Professionals
  • Presenter: Fatima Ramirez - Student Assistant in Human Resources Student Employment Program
    Do you identify as a First-Generation Professional (FGP) or want to better understand what it means to be an FGP?  This presentation is for you. First-Generation Professionals represent a growing number of people who are in the workforce. Today, 1 out of 3 employees identify as first-generation. Join me as we discuss what unique challenges this group encounters and how we can navigate through these challenges to create a more inclusive workplace.

• Elevate Your LinkedIn
  • Presenter, Elaine Le, Director of Workforce Development from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Orange Coast (Costa Mesa, Irvine, Newport Beach, Orange, Santa Ana) will take you through how to "get noticed" on LinkedIn.
    Level Up Your LinkedIn will teach students the essentials of creating a strong LinkedIn profile to leverage their personal brand on a digital platform. Our goal is to empower young professionals to strategically utilize their LinkedIn to connect with industry professionals to gain exposure to career exploration opportunities.

• Financial Education Workshops:  Presenter - Schools First Federal Credit Union
  • Financial Education Workshop: Paying for College
    In this workshop, we present an overview of the many options available to help pay for college. We will discuss different types of financial aid and student loan programs that can help cover the cost of college. We will also share resources and tips to help families make informed decisions about paying for their student's higher education.
  • Financial Education Workshop: Auto Buying
    An introduction to buying a car. We will discuss steps and tips to help you get the best deal and/or loans that fit your budget.
  • Financial Education Workshop: Budgeting 101
    In this workshop, we discuss the importance of setting financial goals and using a budget as a way to achieve those goals. We will review the fundamentals of budgeting along with resources to help your overall financial well-being.
  • Financial Education Workshop: Understanding Credit and Credit Score
    We will discuss what credit is, and the best practices to help you utilize credit wisely. We will review credit scores and how they are calculated and all the ways they can affect your life. We will also share resources available to help navigate individual credit needs and scenarios.

• Elevate Your LinkedIn Profile: Professional Headshots
  • Presenter, Elaine Le, Director of Workforce Development from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Orange Coast (Costa Mesa, Irvine, Newport Beach, Orange, Santa Ana) will offer this second part to her Elevate Your LinkedIn Profile to "get noticed" on LinkedIn.
    Elaine is a photographer that will be offering the opportunity to have a professional headshot taken to be used on your LinkedIn profile. These are professional headshots so it is required that you come dressed to impress to participate in this opportunity.

• Creating Respect, Safety, and Inclusion for Transgender & Nonbinary Students and Employees
  • Presenter: Erin Pollard - Manager of Student Equity at Irvine Valley College
    Best practices to support LGBTQ+ employees can change quickly as new laws are added and cultural expectations evolve. Additionally, Transgender and Nonbinary employees and students need our support in unique ways from their fellow LGBTQ community members. This session will help boost your cultural competency to communicate with, and support, gender-diverse individuals within your organization. Participants will leave with a clear understanding of the current laws that impact this work as well as a list of action items to best support our trans and nonbinary colleagues and students.

• Ice Cream Social Hour
  • I scream...you scream...we all scream for ice cream!!
    Come join us for some delicious ice cream and networking. Who deserves this special treat more than you? Student employees are key on campus, and we are so appreciative and lucky to have each student employee help us get the work on campus done. We could not do it without your partnership. We are privileged to be a part of your learning process.

A little history and background of National Student Employment Week (NSEW):

National Student Employment Week was inaugurated by the National Student Employment Association.  Although there are no sources indicating when the first NSEW was held, it is believed that the earliest employment of students began around the same time as the founding of Harvard College in 1636.

The National Student Employment Association is an organization working to promote student employment through research, professional development, opportunities, and the exchange of information. Colleges and universities across the country recognize the importance of student employees!  Every year, the National Student Employment Association (NSEA) declares the second full week in April National Student Employment Week. This week was established to increase public awareness and to recognize students who work while attending college.  It is also a time to enrich the student experience by providing training and development that prepare students for their careers.  Universities and colleges celebrate this week by appreciating jobs well done.  Every year, this week brings a chance to recognize the importance of the student workforce in the education sector and honors the student employees who have continued to set a good example.

Student employees perform invaluable services with enthusiasm, dedication, and initiative.  Setting aside this special week to draw the awareness of others, both on and off campus, is the perfect opportunity for us to show our appreciation for all that our student employees do.
